HISTORY

History (from Greek ἱστορίαhistoria, meaning “inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation”)[2] is the study of the past as it is described in written documents.[3][4] Events occurring before written record are considered prehistory. It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. Scholars who write about history are called historians.

History can also refer to the academic discipline which uses a narrative to examine and analyse a sequence of past events, and objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect that determine them.[5][6] Historians sometimes debate the nature of history and its usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing “perspective” on the problems of the present.[5][7][8][9]

Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surrounding King Arthur), are usually classified as cultural heritage or legends, because they do not show the “disinterested investigation” required of the discipline of history.[10][11] Herodotus, a 5th-century BC Greek historian is considered within the Western tradition to be the “father of history”, and, along with his contemporary Thucydides, helped form the foundations for the modern study of human history. Their works continue to be read today, and the gap between the culture-focused Herodotus and the military-focused Thucydides remains a point of contention or approach in modern historical writing. In East Asia, a state chronicle, the Spring and Autumn Annals was known to be compiled from as early as 722 BC although only 2nd-century BC texts survived.

Ancient influences have helped spawn variant interpretations of the nature of history which have evolved over the centuries and continue to change today. The modern study of history is wide-ranging, and includes the study of specific regions and the study of certain topical or thematical elements of historical investigation. Often history is taught as part of primary and secondary education, and the academic study of history is a major discipline in university studies.

Cultural studies is a field of theoretically, politically, and empirically engaged cultural analysis that concentrates upon the political dynamics of contemporary culture, its historical foundations, defining traits, conflicts, and contingencies.[1] Cultural studies researchers generally investigate how cultural practices relate to wider systems of power associated with or operating through social phenomena, such as ideology, class structures, national formations, ethnicity, sexual orientation,gender, and generation. A key concern for cultural studies practitioners is the examination of the forces within and through which socially organized people conduct and participate in the construction of their everyday lives.[4]

Cultural studies combines a variety of politically engaged critical approaches drawn including semiotics, Marxism, feminist theory, ethnography, critical race theory, Post-structuralism, Postcolonialism, social theory, political theory, history,philosophy, literary theory, media theory, film/video studies, communication studies, political economy, translation studies,museum studies and art history/criticism to study cultural phenomena in various societies and historical periods. In the United States, civil servants and academics such as Woodrow Wilson promoted civil service reform in the 1880s, moving public administration into academia.[7]However, “until the mid-20th century and the dissemination of the German sociologist Max Weber‘s theory of bureaucracy” there was not “much interest in a theory of public administration”.[8] The field is multidisciplinary in character; one of the various proposals for public administration’s sub-fields sets out six pillars, including human resourcesorganizational theorypolicy analysisstatisticsbudgeting, and ethics.[9]

We furthermore must develop a thorough understanding of the nature of the data involved including the data’s structure, persistence, transience, ownership and binary nature. Based on this understanding, supplemented with a good grasp of the available technologies, we can then design and build a set of technical and managerial tools that contribute to a problem’s solution or the realization of a business opportunity.

Studying business information systems also involves learning about the various organizations involved in the development and standardization of information technologies and the implications of the technical choices organizations make. This implies that we must learn how to evaluate and measure the effects of these choices on the behavior and performance of the host organizations.

The Business Information Systems degree at OSU prepares you for a career in business information systems. The program provides a solid foundation in business administration, to which the Business Information Systems courses add an emphasis on business information systems. Graduates from the college’s Business Information Systems program have widely varying careers. A few choose to become software developers, but most others become business process analysts, quality control managers, data modelers, teachers (yes, it happens!), systems analysts, software compliance testers, or something else entirely. Some students, especially those with dual degrees, find ways to specialize in the business information systems aspects of another business discipline. HISTORY

It is an umbrella term that relates to past events as well as the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of information about these events. History can also refer to the academic discipline which uses a narrative to examine and analyse a sequence of past events, and objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect that determine them.[5][6] Historians sometimes debate the nature of history and its usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing “perspective” on the problems of the present.[5][7][8][9]

Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surrounding King Arthur), are usually classified as cultural heritage or legends, because they do not show the “disinterested investigation” required of the discipline of history.[10][11] Herodotus, a 5th-century BC Greek historian is considered within the Western tradition to be the “father of history”, and, along with his contemporary Thucydides, helped form the foundations for the modern study of human history. Linguistics

Linguistics is the scientific study of language,[1] and involves an analysis of language form, language meaning, and language in context.[2] The earliest activities in the documentation and description of language have been attributed to the 6th century BC Indian grammarian Pāṇini,[3][4] who wrote a formal description of the Sanskrit language in his Aṣṭādhyāyī.[5]

Linguists traditionally analyse human language by observing an interplay between sound and meaning.[6] Phonetics is the study of speech and non-speech sounds, and delves into their acoustic and articulatory properties. The study of language meaning, on the other hand, deals with how languages encode relations between entities, properties, and other aspects of the world to convey, process, and assign meaning, as well as manage and resolve ambiguity.[7] While the study of semanticstypically concerns itself with truth conditionspragmatics deals with how situational context influences the production of meaning.[8]

Grammar is a system of rules which governs the production and use of utterances in a given language. These rules apply to sound[9] as well as meaning, and include componential subsets of rules, such as those pertaining to phonology (the organisation of phonetic sound systems), morphology (the formation and composition of words), and syntax (the formation and composition of phrases and sentences).[10] Modern theories that deal with the principles of grammar are largely based within Noam Chomsky‘s framework of generative linguistics.[11]

In the early 20th century, Ferdinand de Saussure distinguished between the notions of langue and parole in his formulation of structural linguistics. According to him, parole is the specific utterance of speech, whereas langue refers to an abstract phenomenon that theoretically defines the principles and system of rules that govern a language.[12] This distinction resembles the one made by Noam Chomsky between competence and performance in his theory of transformative or generative grammar. According to Chomsky, competence is an individual’s innate capacity and potential for language (like in Saussure’s langue), while performance is the specific way in which it is used by individuals, groups, and communities (i.e., parole, in Saussurean terms).[13]

The study of parole (which manifests through cultural discourses and dialects) is the domain of sociolinguistics, the sub-discipline that comprises the study of a complex system of linguistic facets within a certain speech community (governed by its own set of grammatical rules and laws). Discourse analysis further examines the structure of texts and conversations emerging out of a speech community’s usage of language.[14] This is done through the collection of linguistic data, or through the formal discipline of corpus linguistics, which takes naturally occurring texts and studies the variation of grammatical and other features based on such corpora (or corpus data).

A key concern for cultural studies practitioners is the examination of the forces within and through which socially organized people conduct and participate in the construction of their everyday lives.[4]

Cultural studies combines a variety of politically engaged critical approaches drawn including semiotics, Marxism, feminist theory, ethnography, critical race theory, Post-structuralism, Postcolonialism, social theory, political theory, history,philosophy, literary theory, media theory, film/video studies, communication studies, political economy, translation studies,museum studies and art history/criticism to study cultural phenomena in various societies and historical periods. Television (TV) is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting moving images in monochrome (black and white), or in colour, and in two or three dimensions and sound. The term can refer to a television set, a television program (“TV show”), or the medium of television transmission. Television is a mass medium for advertising, entertainment and news.

Television became available in crude experimental forms in the late 1920s, but it would still be several years before the new technology would be marketed to consumers. After World War II, an improved form of black-and-white TV broadcasting became popular in the United States and Britain, and television sets became commonplace in homes, businesses, and institutions. During the 1950s, television was the primary medium for influencing public opinion.[1] In the mid-1960s, color broadcasting was introduced in the US and most other developed countries. The availability of multiple types of archival storage media such as BetamaxVHS tape, local disks, DVDs, flash drives, high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and cloud digital video recorders have enabled viewers to watch pre-recorded material—such as movies— at home on their own time schedule. For many reasons, especially the convenience of remote retrieval, the storage of television and video programming now occurs on the cloud. At the end of the first decade of the 2000s, digital television transmissions greatly increased in popularity. Another development was the move from standard-definition television (SDTV) (576i, with 576 interlaced lines of resolution and 480i) to high-definition television (HDTV), which provides a resolution that is substantially higher. HDTV may be transmitted in various formats: 1080p1080i and 720p. Since 2010, with the invention of smart televisionInternet television has increased the availability of television programs and movies via the Internet through streaming video services such as NetflixAmazon VideoiPlayerHuluRoku and Chromecast.

In 2013, 79% of the world’s households owned a television set.[2] The replacement of early bulky, high-voltage cathode ray tube (CRT) screen displays with compact, energy-efficient, flat-panel alternative technologies such as LCDs (both fluorescent-backlit and LED), OLED displays, and plasma displays was a hardware revolution that began with computer monitors in the late 1990s. Most TV sets sold in the 2000s were flat-panel, mainly LEDs. Major manufacturers announced the discontinuation of CRT, DLP, plasma, and even fluorescent-backlit LCDs by the mid-2010s.[3][4] In the near future, LEDs are expected to be gradually replaced by OLEDs.[5] Also, major manufacturers have announced that they will increasingly produce smart TVs in the mid-2010s.[6][7][8] Smart TVs with integrated Internet and Web 2.0 functions became the dominant form of television by the late 2010s.[9]

Television signals were initially distributed only as terrestrial television using high-powered radio-frequency transmitters to broadcast the signal to individual television receivers. Alternatively television signals are distributed by coaxial cable or optical fibersatellite systems and, since the 2000s via the Internet. Until the early 2000s, these were transmitted as analog signals, but a transition to digital television is expected to be completed worldwide by the late 2010s. A standard television set is composed of multiple internal electronic circuits, including a tuner for receiving and decoding broadcast signals. In recent years, biotechnology has expanded in sophistication, scope, and applicability.

The science of biotechnology can be broken down into subdisciplines called red, white, green, and blue. Red biotechnology involves medical processes such as getting organisms to produce new drugs, or using stem cells to regenerate damaged human tissues and perhaps re-grow entire organs. White (also called gray) biotechnology involves industrial processes such as the production of new chemicals or the development of new fuels for vehicles. Biotechnology, like other advanced technologies, has the potential for misuse. Concern about this has led to efforts by some groups to enact legislation restricting or banning certain processes or programs, such as human cloning and embryonic stem-cell research. The joint term is associated with schools of library and information science (abbreviated to “SLIS”). Based on this understanding, supplemented with a good grasp of the available technologies, we can then design and build a set of technical and managerial tools that contribute to a problem’s solution or the realization of a business opportunity.

Studying business information systems also involves learning about the various organizations involved in the development and standardization of information technologies and the implications of the technical choices organizations make. This implies that we must learn how to evaluate and measure the effects of these choices on the behavior and performance of the host organizations.

The Business Information Systems degree at OSU prepares you for a career in business information systems. The program provides a solid foundation in business administration, to which the Business Information Systems courses add an emphasis on business information systems. Graduates from the college’s Business Information Systems program have widely varying careers. A few choose to become software developers, but most others become business process analysts, quality control managers, data modelers, teachers (yes, it happens!), systems analysts, software compliance testers, or something else entirely. nvironmental engineering system is the branch of engineering concerned with the application of scientific and engineering principles for protection of human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors; protection of environments, both local and global, from potentially deleterious effects of natural and human activities; and improvement of environmental quality.[1]

Environmental engineering system can also be described as a branch of applied science and technology that addresses the issues of energy preservation, protection of assets and control of waste from human and animal activities. Furthermore, it is concerned with finding plausible solutions in the field of public health, such as waterborne diseases, implementing laws which promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas. It involves waste water management, air pollutioncontrol, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, animal agriculture, environmental sustainability,public health and environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

Environmental engineers system study the effect of technological advances on the environment. To do so, they conduct studies on hazardous-waste management to evaluate the significance of such hazards, advise on treatment and containment, and develop regulations to prevent mishaps. Environmental engineers design municipal water supply andindustrial wastewater treatment systems.[2][3] They address local and worldwide environmental issues such as the effects ofacid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhausts and industrial sources.[4][5][6][7]
